Dark Mori Style
This is a personal explanation of what I have observed & researched, I am by no means an expert, I only learnt about the fashion the tail end of last year & over the pass couple month have really taken an active interested in it and really began to explore it.
What is Dark Mori?
Dark mori is a sub-style of Mori Girl. Mori means “forest” in Japanese, and the style concept is “a girl (or boy) who looks like she is living in the forest” The look is natural & earthy. Dark Mori is the incarnation of this fashion that revels in the melancholy of the forest. Dark mori uses variations of blacks and greys where traditional mori kei uses whites and cremes.
Mori kei fashion is heavily layered, and often incorporates heavy knits and lace to evoke a charming, hand-made feeling. While many dark romantic types identify with the solitary, girl-living-in-the-woods ideals of mori-kei, we often associate ourselves with the darker aspects of the woodland fairy-tale like the woods witch. Raw edges and tattered lace are used to give dark mori garments a worn look.
How to dress:
I think the two key factors of the fashion are loose & layers. Clothing of the Mori Girl is not body conscious, in other words you don’t wear anything thats fitted or hugs the body, you want to keep it loose. Buy a couple size up from your actual size (if you’re S-M go for a L-XL). A-line dresses & tops, balloon dresses, flared jersey tops are a few example of clothes that work for this style
Secondly is layering. You want a minimum of 3 layers, for example: long skirt, dress, cardigan (though you can get away with just 2 layers if you do it right). Each layer should be showing. Don’t go crazy with layers, this is the trickiest part of the style, start with 2-3 layers to begin with, and once you get that down it should be easy from there
As for accessories, think natural; flowers, branches, antlers, horns, crystals. For Dark Mori throw in bones, dried flowers, raw crystals, encased insects.
I’ve also read that both styles draw inspiration from Fairy Tales. For me personally Baba Yaga has given me inspiration for my own Dark Mori clothes. so find your favourite fairy tale & look up some artwork.

One of the great things about this style is that it doesn’t have any strict rules & you can make it as much as your own as you like,so long as you follow the loose & layered guidelines =)
Hope this helps! =)
